For many people, autumn equals mushroom and chestnut picking. But beware: certainly not all mushrooms are edible, and several species look very similar.
Three children are currently fighting for their lives at the University Hospital in Essen, Germany, after eating mushrooms they picked themselves. Only a liver transplant can save them. The children are in intensive care; their liver functions have failed. Without an emergency transplant, that can lead to liver failure. And that is very often fatal. So reports the hospital.
Initial investigative acts indicate that they may have eaten from a green tuberous manite (Amanita phalloides). This is very similar to edible congeners, but is highly toxic. Even small amounts of the poison can be life-threatening.
