Liverpool defender Joe Gomez may be on his way out of Anfield as the England international was left out of the squad to face Ipswich on Saturday.
The centre-back was not part of the 22-man squad that travelled to Ipswich to kick off their 2024-25 Premier League season. Gomez has faced an uncertain future at Merseyside for some time but The Times reports that he is currently considering his options amid suggestions he will not play a part under new coach Arne Slot.
Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Fulham are among the Premier League teams credited with an interest in the 27-year-old, who initially joined the Reds from Charlton at the age of 18. Meanwhile, there are reportedly clubs from abroad also monitoring his situation. It is believed Liverpool tried to use Gomez as a makeweight in a deal with the Magpies for Anthony Gordon, which has left him unsettled.
Gomez is the longest-serving player in the Liverpool squad at present and the club are not forcing him out as the two parties have had talks over his role within Slot’s team, the report says. While there is no guarantee he will be gone by the time the transfer window closes at the end of August, Slot has so far preferred Jarell Quansah and Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, with Ibrahima Konate next in the pecking order ahead of Gomez.
The defender will have to seriously consider his place at Anfield over the next two weeks as it appears opting for a move to another team will be his best shot at getting regular playing time in the new season.
