Student volunteers taking part in an archaeological dig in northern France have found a rare ‘time capsule ‘ containing a message from an ancient archaeologist who lived two centuries ago, local authorities said.

While exploring the remains of an ancient Gallic village on a cliff in the Dieppe district of Upper Normandy , they came across a clay vessel containing a unique object.

Inside the jar was a small glass bottle , and inside it was a carefully rolled paper note tied with a string.

” PJ Féret, a native of Dieppe and member of several intellectual societies, carried out excavations here in January 1825. He continued his research in this vast area known as the Cité de Limes or Caesar’s Camp,” the message said.

“It was an absolutely magical moment. We knew there had been excavations here in the past, but to find this message from 200 years ago… was a total surprise,” team leader Guillaume Blondel told the BBC .

He explained that archaeologists rarely leave notes of this kind. “You sometimes see these ‘time capsules’ left by carpenters when they build houses. But it’s very rare in archaeology. Most archaeologists prefer to think that no one will come after them, because they’ve already done all the work,” he added.
