Omar García urged the National Economic Council to meet to evaluate strategies to mitigate the impact of the war in the Middle East and the dockers’ strike in the United States.

Honduran political analyst Omar Garcia warned Thursday that the conflict in Israel could result in an increase in oil prices, which would directly impact the pockets of Hondurans.

“If this continues, we will have problems with respect to the rise in oil prices. It is imminent,” said García on Thursday on the program Frente a Frente on Channel 5.

Garcia stressed that those most affected in Honduras will be residents of fishing villages and tourist areas on the northern coast.

Israel launched a ground military operation this week to attack positions of the pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah in Lebanon, amid an exchange of threats between Israel and Iran, which attacked the Hebrew state with missiles on Tuesday .

In addition, Israel is at war with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza.

Strike at US ports

At the same time, Garcia highlighted the critical situation caused by the massive strike of 45,000 longshoremen that is underway in the ports of the United States.

The White House has urged port authorities to improve their offers to resolve the dispute, which could otherwise lead to disruptions in the shipping and receiving of goods, including essential fuels.

The strike, which continues to spread, could mean up to 21 days of disruption, resulting in the loss of subsidies for oil and gasoline, further affecting consumers.

“Nothing will be able to be sent to the United States, nor will we receive the oil,” the analyst said.

Calls on the Government to plan for negative impact

Garcia urged the National Economic Council to meet to evaluate strategies to mitigate the impact of these events, noting that the current situation could further weaken the country’s economy.

“If I were the president of this country, I would be meeting in the National Economic Council to see how we can neutralize this because it is going to hit us hard,” concluded García.
