The development was confirmed by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Friday during a conversation with newsmen.

Following condemnation and outrage that trailed a Chinese man allegedly destroying the Nigerian naira and the demand for his arrest, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said it is investigating the incident.

The development was confirmed by the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Friday during a conversation with newsmen.

SaharaReporters had reported that the incident occurred at a Chinese-owned company along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, when officials from the Lagos State government arrived to seal off the premises over alleged regulatory violations.

In the video which has now gone viral on social media, the Chinese national was seen resisting the officials’ attempts to shut down the company.

He had brought out some Naira notes from his bag during the confrontation and tore them.

Some persons believed to be staff of the establishment were also seen stopping the arrest of the Chinese national in the video.

When SaharaReporters earlier contacted the EFCC spokesperson for reaction and comment on the action to be taken against the Chinese citizen over the Naira abuse offence, Oyewale told SaharaReporters that he heard about the incident but had not seen the video.

He however failed to provide feedback to enquiries when SaharaReporters sent him a copy of the viral video.
