Unprecedented since the return of the monarchy to Spain in 1975, photographs and videos are making headlines in the press all over the world. King Felipe VI is sneered at by a hostile crowd in Paiporta, near Valencia, one of the cities most affected by recent floods.
With more than 200 dead people and the death toll from the recent natural disaster still only provisional, every passing hour brings about more victims and missing people. The immediate future looks just as dangerous and unstable, with part of the country still being on red alert. The situation is untenable, and the population is desperate.
Coming to support the population, the sovereign of Spain, the president of the government, Pedro Sanchez, and the president of the region, Carlos Mason, were sneered by the crowd.
“Assassin! Assassin!”, shouted demonstrators, while some held sticks and threw mud at the royal couple. Queen Letizia, with dirt on her cheeks, collapsed in tears.
But while the king faced Spanish people’s anger, the head of government, Pedro Sánchez, preferred to leave. A car in his convoy was attacked, with protestors kicking the vehicle, breaking its windows.
Pedro Sánchez denounces the far right behind the incident.
