This is a first in the world of exploration. In 2018, a team of scientists, accompanied by the grandson of Commander Cousteau and the entrepreneur Richard Branson, went to a depth of more than 120 meters, to the bottom of the Great Blue Hole, in the heart of the Caribbean Sea.
80 kilometers from the American continent, the Great Blue Hole is one of the most famous underwater chasms in the world, reports Demotivateur. This grandiose site was revealed by Commander Cousteau in the 1970s. Very popular with tourists nowadays, the Great Blue Hole is a wonder of the oceans, surrounded by a coral reef and turquoise waters.
Since its discovery, the site has continued to fascinate explorers. It was in December 2018 that an exploration mission was launched. Two submarines were mobilized for the occasion, diving to a depth of 90 meters, into the hole.
The explorers immortalized their descent, and filmed a place that seemed poor in life and was darker than ever. “The explorers also discovered a layer of hydrogen sulfide, a flammable, toxic gas with the smell of rotten eggs,” emphasizes Demotivateur. At the base of the hole, another discovery greatly surprised the scientific team. There, human remains were found, as well as garbage, plastic bottles and even a GoPro camera. Considering the site sacred, and in agreement with the authorities, the explorers didn’t touch any of these “finds”.
The images of this journey into the big hole are likely, according to the explorers, to “terrify the world”.
