At least one person died on Wednesday after two explosions occurred near the Supreme Court of Justice in Brasilia, police sources reported.
The incident occurred at the beginning of the evening, when a plenary session in the court was ending and the reasons for what happened are still unknown.
In a statement, the Supreme Court said “two loud bangs were heard at the end of the session and the judges were safely removed from the building.”
According to the Supreme Court’s statement, officials and collaborators were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters and police are at the scene and have isolated the area, which also includes the legislative headquarters and the Planalto Palace, the seat of the Presidency of the Republic.
According to a witness to the events cited by local media, a man threw an explosive device at the statue located in front of the Supreme Court headquarters and representing Justice.
The Supreme Court headquarters was one of the buildings attacked, along with the Planalto palace and the headquarters of Congress, by thousands of Bolsonaristas on January 8, 2023, in an attack that the courts are treating as an attempted coup against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The Supreme Court is one of the main targets of attacks by both former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters. EFE
