In a statement on Sunday, the Honduran National Police ruled out that a stabbing attack reported the day before in the municipality of Langue, in the department of Valle, was an act of political violence.

“We strongly rule out the possibility that this was an act of political violence,” said the Secretary of Security, Gustavo Sánchez, on his Twitter account (now X), when sharing the official statement.

On Saturday, the head of the National Party, Tomás Zambrano, reported that a supporter of that political institution was stabbed by a member of the Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre) outside a cemetery, which was crowded due to the commemoration of the Day of the Dead.

The incident sparked various reactions on social media, with political leaders calling for a halt to political violence.

In this regard, the security authorities rejected the attack as a political act and stated that the act of violence occurred after the aggressor, aged 55 and who was arrested, allegedly drunk and asked the victim for money and she refused.

“We also regret that this incident is being used for petty political purposes by actors accustomed to lying,” Sanchez said.

The National Police also called on people not to encourage violence with false information.

Among those who spoke out about the incident was National Party deputy Merary Díaz, who insisted that the discussion focused on political issues, in a context of growing polarization in the country.

In addition, the deputy mayor of San Pedro Sula, from the Libre party, Omar Menjívar, who reacted that “in no way is violence justifiable to express and resolve political differences, and much less criminal violence.”

The victim, who was transferred from Langue to the Escuela Hospital in Tegucigalpa due to the lack of medical attention in her area, is in serious but stable condition.

From the hospital, the man identified as Ángel Antonio Cisnado, recorded a video asking for his health and calling for peace, which has resonated on social media.

Experts warn that whether or not the incident is false, these types of attacks and allegations not only raise concerns for the safety of citizens, but also reflect a climate of intolerance that could lead to further confrontations between supporters of different parties.

Did they change his shirt?

It is worth mentioning that a video has been circulating in which the alleged attacker appears dressed in a red shirt with the initials “frp” printed in black, which the opposition attributes to the Popular Resistance Front, which emerged after the 2009 coup d’état.

However, in the photo in which he appears arrested, the suspect appears wearing another shirt, also red, but with a small gold logo.
