A United Nations report officially released on Tuesday shows that Ukrainian prisoners of war are being systematically mistreated and tortured in Russian camps.
In addition, 93 Ukrainian prisoners of war have already reportedly been executed by the Russians. Striking footage has been circulating on Telegram in recent weeks showing 16 Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered near Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, being lined up by Russian soldiers and then shot dead. The survivors were then shot.
A new UN report shows that the situation is also particularly cruel in Russian prison camps: mistreatment, torture and rape are systematic and are carried out with the knowledge or on the orders of superiors.
Many prisoners are sick, but receive no medical care. Soldiers are beaten, tortured, nearly strangled, subjected to electric shocks and mock executions.
The Prosecutor General of Ukraine has already opened an investigation into the circumstances. He reportedly already has evidence of the execution of 93 prisoners of war on the front. The 16 prisoners from last week shown in the Telegram video are not yet included in this figure. If the report is correct, this is the largest liquidation since the beginning of the war. The execution of prisoners of war is a war crime.
