Hermilda de los Dolores Gaviria Berrío grew up in a rural setting in Antioquia , where her family was engaged in agriculture . From a young age, she showed an interest in education, which led her to become a teacher.

Her dedication to teaching was a distinctive feature of her character, and she became a respected figure in her community. Hermilda married Abel de Jesús Escobar Echeverri, a small farmer, and together they had six children, Pablo being the most famous of them.

Not all of Gaviria’s children are known, however the identities of Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, Roberto Escobar Gaviria, Laura Escobar and Nicolás Escobar are known.

The Escobar family lived in modest surroundings, and Hermilda worked hard to provide her children with an education. Despite economic hardships, she and her husband instilled in their children the values of hard work and perseverance.

Gaviria was known for her love and dedication to her family, and her influence was fundamental in shaping Pablo’s character.

Her relationship as Pablo Escobar’s mother

Pablo Escobar was born on December 1, 1949 , and from an early age he showed exceptional business skills. Hermilda, being a loving and protective mother, supported her son in his aspirations.

However, as Pablo entered the world of drug trafficking, Hermilda’s life changed dramatically. Despite his success, Pablo’s life of crime brought with it a series of challenges and dangers that affected the entire family.

Hermilda was a key figure in Pablo’s life, and their relationship was complex. Despite her son’s illegal activities, she continued to support him and defend his actions.

Hermilda is said to have even helped her son hide drugs in clothes she sewed herself. This unwavering loyalty to Pablo was a reflection of her maternal love, but it also placed her in a compromising position.

Life during the height of Escobar’s drug trafficking

During the 1980s, Pablo Escobar became one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world, and his family enjoyed a lavish lifestyle.

Hermilda, while enjoying the comforts that her son’s money provided, also faced the constant fear of the repercussions of Pablo’s actions.

The violence and chaos surrounding drug trafficking affected her family and her community, and Hermilda was forced to deal with the reality of being the mother of a criminal.

Despite fame and fortune, Hermilda kept a low profile. She was known for her strong character and determination, and was often seen involved in community activities. However, the shadow of her son always followed her, and her life became a constant tug-of-war between pride and worry.

Death of Pablo Escobar

Hermilda’s life took a drastic turn in 1993, when Pablo was murdered by Colombian authorities. This event marked the end of an era and left Hermilda in a state of deep grief and loss.

The death of her son meant not only the loss of a loved one, but also the collapse of the life she had known. Hermilda became a symbol of the tragedy that drug trafficking had brought to many families in Colombia.

Despite expectations that Escobar would be buried in an eccentric manner, his mother opted for a simple funeral. She gave the caretaker a pair of jeans and a shirt, her son’s favorite clothes, and asked that he be buried barefoot, since that was how he liked to be at home.

Hermilda also insisted that no jewelry or valuables be included, symbolizing the humility she claimed Escobar represented.

Pablo Escobar, known as one of the most notorious criminals in history, was finally buried in a cheap coffin, in accordance with his mother’s wishes.

Pablo was always a good man in his mother’s eyes

Despite Escobar’s reputation and the devastation he caused, his mother and father saw him as a person who had been corrupted by circumstances, a sentiment he expressed to mortician Omar Carmona during the final moments of the preparation of the body.

After Pablo’s death, Hermilda retired from public life and moved to Itagüí, where she lived in relative tranquility. Despite her son’s notoriety, she tried to lead a normal life, far from the scandals and violence that had marked her previous life.

However, Pablo’s legacy always haunted her, and his story became a topic of interest for the media and researchers.
