You might think that the singer born in 1958 is just a pretty face who has been making hearts flutter for decades. Think again!

Before imagining himself as an adored singer, pushed by his mother, little Simon, barely six years old, went to auditions to play in advertisements in the United Kingdom. One of these, filmed in 1964 for Persil washing powder, is easy to find on the Internet. His delightfully old-fashioned side and the kid’s cute smile quickly convinced us that “all mothers need that dazzling white that is essential with a boy in the house” . At the age when his future companions in Duran Duran were still struggling with their multiplication tables, Simon Le Bon had his first big success! Since he was also part of his parish choir and wore out his pants in the same school as Elton John, we can nevertheless affirm that music also occupied a place in his childhood and adolescence.

A few years later, after some unsuccessful experiences on the stage, he saw himself becoming an actor and finally agreed to join Duran Duran in 1980 only to try to set some of the poems he had written to music. Nearly 45 years later, Stephen Duffy’s replacement, despite some inevitable jolts, is still firmly at the helm of the English group. Their latest album “Danse Macabre” in 2023, judiciously released at Halloween (and offered again on the same date in an enhanced version this year) certainly lacks originality while the cover of “Evil Woman” by Electric Light Orchestra does not equal the 1975 version. With its track record, the group does not have much left to prove anyway. These survivors of New Romanticism have in their bag an impressive list of hits that they are still busy polishing. “Hungry Like The Wolf”, “Rio”, “New Religion”, “Save A Prayer”, “Planet Earth”, “Girls On Film” and the inevitable participation in the soundtrack of a James Bond with “A View To A Kill” in 1985 were more than enough to maintain their status as global stars.

Simon Le Bon also has his sea legs. Since the mid-80s, he has been dipping into his personal kitty to satisfy his other passion. He thus participated in the financing of a sailboat in order to participate in the Whitbread Race, the famous round-the-world sailing race. After a few setbacks, he finally realized his dream, took the helm for a few stages and ranked his “Drum” (the name given to his boat) in an honorable third place. Even today, the singer takes to the open seas as soon as the opportunity presents itself. For a few years now, he has also supported the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for sea rescue. You now understand better why he has always appreciated striped sweaters…
