The singer was born in 1951 in Paris, where his parents ran a sporting goods store.

The young scout learned the violin and the piano and, as a teenager, also rubbed shoulders with the public with a few unpretentious groups, formed among others with high school friends. After obtaining a business degree, he decided to embark on a musical career, guitar in hand. He then joined the group Thaï Phong, which had its first success thanks to the hit “Sister Jane”. The group broke up in 1979 after two other records. Jean-Jacques Goldman will keep one significant encounter from this experience: that of Michael Jones.

His solo career really began a few years later with “Il suffira d’un signe”. The song languished at the bottom of the charts before being boosted by the RTL program director who decided to play the song on the airwaves. Second hit a year later with “Quand la musique est bonne” which, this time, did not need a helping hand to take off. While his career was reaching out to him, he continued to work behind the cash register of the family store. And when he was recognized, he simply pretended to be his cousin!

The 80s were a boom time for the artist, whose songs the public now knew by heart. “Comme toi” and “Au bout de mes rêves” among others completed his list of achievements. In 1985, the unforgettable “Je te donne” with Michael Jones invaded the airwaves. The title would be covered by Worlds Apart ten years later. The title “Là-bas” would appear on the French baccalaureate syllabus in the early 2000s.

In 1990, a new challenge for the singer who celebrated the birth of the trio with the release of the album “Fredericks Goldman Jones”. The opus, which notably contains the famous “A nos actes manqués” will sell more than two million copies. The artist also collaborates with many stars, such as Patricia Kaas and Marc Lavoine. He is also the one behind Khaled’s “Aïcha” and many songs by his friend Céline Dion.

Jean-Jacques Goldman did not, however, abandon his solo career and the album “En passant” which came out in 1997 confirmed, if it were still necessary, the talent of this jack-of-all-trades to whom we owe more than 120 songs, which he did not always sign with his name, sometimes preferring the discretion of different pseudonyms.

In the early 2000s, he slowly withdrew from the music scene, wishing to devote himself fully to his loved ones. However, we see him again on stage, with the Enfoirés whose anthem he composed in just three days, at the request of his friend Coluche. In the shadows, he continues to write for others, such as Christophe Maé and Patrick Fiori. Despite his media absence, the prolific lyricist retains the affection of his public, who voted him “Favorite Personality of the French” for the thirteenth time in 2023.
