A 13-year-old girl lost almost her entire right hand Tuesday afternoon after she picked up fireworks that bullies had thrown through her apartment window in Brussels.
The girl had come home from school for lunch when two underage boys threw two fireworks rods through the kitchen window of her apartment. The kitchen window broke in the process. The girl summoned the fireworks, presumably to throw them out again as soon as possible, but the rods exploded in her hand. The girl was taken to the hospital bleeding heavily, and the entire apartment building was evacuated. Witnesses had seen from the street what had happened.
The girl has already undergone surgery and lost four fingers. The perpetrators, one of whom was said to be only 15, allegedly targeted the victim’s brother. Indeed, they had been bullying him for a long time and probably tried to target him in the fireworks attack. They allegedly threw fireworks at the terrace earlier in the week. The identity of the 15-year-old main perpetrator is known; it is not yet clear whether he was arrested.
