Carlos Castaño Gil’s children have kept a low profile, distancing themselves from their father’s legacy of violence and seeking new opportunities in life.
Carlos Castaño Gil was born on May 15, 1965 in Amalfi, Antioquia. He was one of 12 children in a family that was dedicated to dairy farming. From a young age, he was involved in selling cheese, but his life took a radical turn when he joined the hitmen organization of Pablo Escobar in Medellín , where his older brother, Fidel Castaño, was already involved in drug trafficking.
The family suffered a tragedy when their father, Jesús Antonio Castaño González, was kidnapped and died in captivity. This event led Fidel to move Carlos and other brothers to his lands, where they formed a group to avenge their father’s death.
After killing Conrado Ramírez, the guerrilla responsible for the kidnapping, the Castaños founded the Peasant Self-Defense Forces of Córdoba and Urabá (Accu), establishing a reign of terror in the region and seizing large amounts of land.
How much money did Carlos Castaño have?
Carlos Castaño Gil amassed a huge fortune throughout his criminal career, although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact amount of his assets. However, his power and influence were such that the authorities offered a reward of 1 billion pesos for information leading to his capture.
This figure reflects the importance that Castaño had within criminal organizations in Colombia, as well as the impact of his activities in drug trafficking and paramilitarism.
