The protesters blocked the highway by burning tires near the Hábitat neighborhood, near the Durazno post office, affecting the flow of vehicles and the transportation of goods.
The Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) paralyzed traffic on Monday on the CA-5 highway, on the way out of Tegucigalpa to the north of Honduras, as a pressure measure to demand justice for the murder of environmentalist Juan López.
The protesters blocked the highway by burning tires near the Hábitat neighborhood, near the Durazno post office, affecting the flow of vehicles and the transportation of goods.
“We want to tell our brothers and sisters that we also stand in solidarity with all of our comrades from Bajo Aguán, with our comrades from Guapinol, with those who have lost a loved one, just as our comrade Juan López has,” said one of the protesters.
Will there be an eviction?
For its part, the National Police is there to maintain calm and prevent the situation that prevents entry and exit from Tegucigalpa from getting out of control.
“The police command has already issued an order for the deployment of officers from the different departmental and metropolitan branches of the National Police to carry out an eviction, always within the framework of human rights,” said Commissioner Miguel Martínez Madrid.
He added that “through the protocol that is already established for the use of progressive force, the collaboration of the protesters is requested through a dialogue to free this public road. We also already have the names of the people who were promoting this occupation since the early hours of the morning.”
Honduras remains one of the most dangerous countries for environmental defenders.
In 2023, the National Human Rights Commissioner (Conadeh) recorded the deaths of 15 environmental defenders, especially those defending territories.
