Nationalist deputy Johana Bermúdez expressed her approval after the swearing-in of the members of the supervisory board of the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS) and suggested that one of the main scourges that must be eradicated is the network of corruption that exists in the IHSS.

“For the first time, I agree that this intervention board is a great opportunity to rescue and reestablish institutionality (…) the network of corruption that has historically existed must be dismantled,” he said.

The doctor also recommended the renewal of all Social Security employees, as well as an audit of the entire system.

“It must be done in a comprehensive manner because it is important to conduct a forensic audit, in which we can identify the contracts, the infrastructure, the human talent and everything that indicates social security,” Bermúdez recommended.

Another suggestion he made was that all processes provided by the insurance company should be digitalized.

IHSS intervention

On November 5, President Xiomara Castro ordered the IHSS to be taken over due to the prolonged crisis in health services, the lack of medicines and the failures in providing care to beneficiaries.

This is how the members of the board were sworn in on November 8. The head of Health,  Carla Paredes , will be the coordinator of the board, and will be accompanied by  technicians Samuel Zelaya and Marco Antonio Estefan , who will be part of the team in charge of restoring the proper functioning of the IHSS.

With this intervention,  the government seeks to restore the confidence of thousands of IHSS beneficiaries and guarantee quality medical care to members, many of whom have reported years of shortages, long waits and inadequate conditions in medical centers.
