From an early age, Cristina Almeida experienced first-hand the challenges faced by people during Franco’s dictatorship. Her father was imprisoned after the start of the Spanish Civil War, and the family moved to Madrid when she was 11 years old. There, she studied law at the Central University of Madrid, standing out as a labor lawyer, defending workers and political prisoners during the Franco years.

With the arrival of democracy, her activism focused on feminism, participating in international conferences and defending women’s rights. She was also a key figure in the country’s political transition, participating in the trial for the Atocha massacre in 1977 and in the founding of Izquierda Unida.

Cristina Almeida’s husband: names and who they were

As for her personal life, Cristina Almeida has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Juan Luis de Madariaga, a lawyer whom she married in 1995. Although their relationship did not prosper, Almeida said in an interview that he confessed to her that he had found someone else shortly after they got married. She calmly told him to go with that person, as she did not share the feeling of possession.

Her second marriage was to Pedro Casañas. Despite their separation, Cristina has maintained a good relationship with him. In her own words, “we get along very well, he comes to see me and helps me with things around the house, he’s very handy.” So, although the couple is no longer together in the traditional sense, they remain close friends.

Throughout her life, Cristina has had many romantic experiences, but she has confessed that she does not have children. Although she has been a mother of her ideas and causes, and has fought tirelessly for the rights of the most disadvantaged, motherhood was not part of her path.
