John is the second cyclone of the Pacific season to make landfall in Mexico.

Cyclone John was downgraded to a remnant low pressure zone on Tuesday after making landfall on Monday as a Category 3 hurricane in Guerrero , a state in southern Mexico that has reported at least two deaths due to the phenomenon.

Even so, a low pressure zone associated with the remnants of the phenomenon was formed, which has a 50% probability of cyclonic development in 48 hours, warned the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

” John has been downgraded to a remnant low pressure zone on land, over the state of Guerrero. However, its wide circulation will produce intense to extraordinary rainfall, strong winds and high waves in the south and southeast of the national territory,” said the SMN in what will be the last report on this phenomenon.

The cyclone surprised because at first the SMN only predicted that it would be a tropical storm that would be downgraded to a depression when it made landfall on Wednesday, but it intensified, accelerated and changed course on Monday, when it strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane and hit the Costa Chica area of Guerrero.

In the latest report, the phenomenon was located 60 kilometers north of Tecpan de Galeana, in Guerrero, and 115 kilometers northwest of Acapulco, in the same state.

In addition, while John was degrading, the SMN warned of the formation of storm Helene , which would become a possible category 1 hurricane on Wednesday near Cancun, the main tourist destination in Mexico, although for now it is not expected to make landfall in Mexican territory.

Due to the passage of John, the Mexican government has deployed more than 18,000 members of the Armed Forces and other agencies in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero, where damage to roads and isolated municipalities is reported.

The affected area was hit almost a year ago, on October 25, by Hurricane Otis, which left more than 50 dead and broke the record for the intensification of a cyclone in the Mexican Pacific.

John is the second cyclone of the Pacific season to make landfall in Mexico, where last week storm Ileana hit the state of Sinaloa in the northwest of the country, causing minor damage.

Meanwhile, three cyclones have hit Mexico from the Atlantic: Hurricane Beryl and Storm Chris, which left no deaths in July, and Storm Alberto in June, which left six dead in Nuevo Leon, a state on Mexico’s northern border.
