Oaxaca authorities confirmed the location of two bodies, an elderly person and a child, in the municipality of Coicoyán de Las Flores.
The death toll from John in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca rose to five on Saturday, bringing the total to at least 24 deaths from the effects of the meteorological phenomenon across the country, including 18 in neighboring Guerrero and one more in Michoacán.
Oaxaca authorities confirmed the location of two bodies, an elderly person and a child, in the municipality of Coicoyán de Las Flores, who were buried in their home by a hill that was softened by the intense rains caused by Cyclone John as it passed through Oaxaca.
Coicoyán de Las Flores is a municipality evaluated by the authorities as one of the poorest in the country because more than 90% of its almost 8,000 inhabitants survive in extreme poverty.
These deaths bring the total number of deaths from John in Oaxaca to five, after Governor Salomón Jara reported three cases last Thursday.
An elderly woman died as a result of a landslide on her home in Santiago Amoltepec, in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, as well as a minor and another elderly person who were swept away by rivers in the Mixteca region.
According to Civil Protection of Oaxaca, the alert continues in the regions of the Sierra Sur and Costa de Oaxaca because the rains will persist during this weekend.
In Guerrero, five more people were found dead in Acapulco, and two more, a mother and her son, are missing after a wall collapsed, bringing the total number of deaths in that state to 18 since the cyclone hit last Monday.
However, official state figures only include eight deaths so far.
Lopez Obrador confirms 8 deaths in Acapulco
This morning, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lamented the death of eight people due to the landslides caused by John on the coast of Acapulco and highlighted the rescue efforts of the Armed Forces.
“The Army, the Navy and the National Guard rescued many families who were isolated in their homes by the floods in Acapulco. This first stage allowed us to save lives and we only regret the loss of eight people due to landslides caused by the heavy rains,” he said.
John was downgraded to a remnant low pressure in Michoacán on Friday, after re-emerging on Wednesday from its remnants after having made landfall on Monday as a Category 3 in Guerrero.
