Honduran consumers will no longer have to pay in dollars for mobile phone and internet services, with the entry into force of the reform to the Consumer Protection Law, which establishes that payments will be in lempiras , after its publication in the Official Gazette La Gaceta .
The reform was approved by the National Congress on August 7, sanctioned a week later by President Xiomara Castro and published on October 14 in La Gaceta, according to reports over the weekend.
The amendment to Article 68 of the Consumer Protection Act responds to the many complaints from consumers regarding abusive practices and deficiencies in the services provided by telephone and internet companies.
Congressman Carlos Umaña, head of the Partido Salvador de Honduras (PSH) caucus, confirmed the news that will benefit consumers’ pockets.
“Thank you very much, Madam President Xiomara Castro, for the sanction and publication of the decree law that prohibits charging in dollars for mobile phone and internet services,” wrote Umaña in X on Sunday.
The decree establishes other measures such as the duration of contracts, which will not exceed six months.
From now on, mobile, landline, cable TV and internet users in Honduras will also no longer have to pay unexpected increases in their bills due to the exchange rate.
The Directorate General for Consumer Protection (DGPC) will be the entity in charge of supervising that companies comply with these new requirements and sanctioning those that continue to charge in dollars.
