Having posted a record-breaking tally of points during the regular season, landing them the Supporters’ Shield, the Herons were fancied by many to go on and achieve the ultimate goal of a claiming a first MLS Cup in the Florida franchise’s relatively brief history.

    Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, as a contender for MVP honours, was expected to lead a charge through the play-offs. Inter Miami did, however, fall at the first hurdle when suffering a shock defeat to Atlanta United across a three-game series.

    WHAT DONOVAN SAID

    After seeing their elimination confirmed, on home soil at Chase Stadium, Messi stormed down the tunnel without acknowledging a loyal fan base or his opponents. Ex-United States international and MLS icon Donovan has told the Unfiltered Soccer podcast of Messi’s petulant display: “I don’t like that. Just shake their hands and say congratulations.

    “Messi walked right off the field. Maybe in the locker room they came out and said congrats or whatever, and by the way, your fans are out there too, at least congratulate them on a great season and thank them for all the support they’ve had.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

    After calming down, Messi did go on to post a social media message that sees his vowing to “come back stronger next year”. The Argentine superstar is under contract through 2025, with the option there for a further 12-month extension beyond that point.
