The Internet can be a powerful tool for education and personal success, but it can also limit intellectual growth.
Pablo Iturrieta, a master in philosophical psychology, warned of the impact of technology on people’s cognitive development, and asserted that reading is a tool that strengthens human abilities.
“People who grew up without access to these technologies, with books, with the little that one could often gather and discern from reality, are people who know more than those who grew up with technology,” Iturrieta said on the program Frente a Frente on Channel 5.
According to Iturrieta, those who were educated without access to digital technologies and resorted to traditional methods, such as reading books and newspapers, developed a greater capacity for thought and abstraction compared to generations that grew up immersed in the digital world.
Iturrieta argues that education through social media and the Internet has generated a form of ignorance, as young people do not develop their cognitive abilities to the same level as previous generations.
“People today, who are educated only through social networks and the Internet, are more ignorant than those who were traditionally educated through reading newspapers, through reading books,” he said.
More attention from parents
In his opinion, premature use of technology can delay brain development and, in some cases, atrophy key functions.
She also stressed that many children are not aware of the educational potential available to them, which makes technology a double-edged sword.
The Internet can be a powerful tool for education and personal success, but it can also be a factor that, without proper guidance, can limit intellectual growth.
For Iturrieta, technology can lead those who consume it excessively to develop mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression.
“Technology has introduced a problem into the family, generating addictions, mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and neurobiological development problems that are reflected in poor academic performance,” said Iturrieta.
For this reason, the big CEOs of Google, Apple, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. do not allow their children to have cell phones, according to Iturrieta.
