Kevin Rodríguez, an energy expert from the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), warned of a possible impact on electricity rates if the Tax Justice Law , currently under debate in the National Congress, is approved.

According to Rodriguez, the approval of this law could lead to a 15% increase in the price of the service, which in turn would generate an increase in the basic basket and impact the pockets of consumers.

Rodríguez also addressed the recent increase in the monetary policy rate (TPM), noting that this change will lead to an increase in the prices of products and services.

“If people have a loan, they will pay more,” he said, criticising the government’s decision to increase the MPR abruptly, instead of following the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) recommendations of doing so gradually over the past two years.

The economist warned that the combination of these factors could result in a significant increase in the price of basic goods, which would seriously affect the purchasing power of citizens.

He also expressed concern that Honduran industries may choose to move to neighbouring countries such as El Salvador or Guatemala in search of a more favourable environment for their operations.

The uncertainty surrounding the Tax Justice Law leaves consumers and businesses on alert as they await the decision of Congress, which could define the economic future of the country, the expert concluded.
