The Secretary of Energy and interim manager of the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE), Erick Tejada, announced this Friday that the state institution achieved a 2.13% decrease in year-over-year losses.

Tejada highlighted that this is a step forward that represents a financial impact of more than 1,150 million lempiras.

“Although significant progress has been made, there is still much to be done in optimizing the National Loss Reduction Program (PNRP),” he said.

He also mentioned that “the operation of the energy program is in a positive stage,” he said.

Since ENEE took back control of loss management in September, it has already overcome the most critical phases of the process.

The official indicated that the company’s debt amounts to 75 billion lempiras, while the annual operating deficit is 7 billion lempiras. However, he projects that, by the end of this year, the deficit will be reduced to approximately 4 billion, which would represent a decrease of 3 billion.

On the other hand, the arrears of electricity users are 15 billion lempiras, although around half of this figure is considered uncollectible due to clients who have changed residence, died or left the country, he explained.

Finally, Tejada announced a clean-up of the portfolio of non-performing debts in order to obtain a more precise figure on the actual arrears, which will allow for better control of the company’s finances.
