WHAT HAPPENED?

Harwood-Bellis could make his senior England debut this week after surprisingly being called up to Lee Carsley’s squad for their Nations League ties. The Three Lions take on Greece on Thursday before a meeting with the Republic of Ireland on Sunday, a game that will be of particular interest to former Manchester United midfielder and Republic of Ireland captain Keane – who is set to become Harwood-Bellis’ father-in-law.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 22-year-old, who came through Manchester City’s academy before joining Southampton in 2023, is engaged to Keane’s daughter, Leah. Despite the Saints’ sitting bottom of the Premier League, Harwood-Bellis’ performances for his club and England’s Under-21s – no doubt helped by the advice that he’s received from the retired midfielder – haven’t gone unnoticed.

    WHAT HARWOOD-BELLIS SAID

“It’s something that is good, yes, and I take a lot of advice,” Harwood-Bellis told the media.

When asked if he’d spoken to Keane about Sunday’s game, the defender replied: “No, everything is focused on Greece at the minute.

“It’s a big game after the result at home. Obviously, we want to go over there and get a result. It will be a good atmosphere and a full house. We are looking forward to it and take the challenge on.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR HARWOOD-BELLIS?

Harwood-Bellis will hope to get the opportunity to make his first senior appearance for his country this week. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Newcastle defender Lewis Hall also received their first senior call-ups as England look to supplant Greece at the top of Group B2.
