Hungary has announced its intention to purchase more gas from Russia starting next year.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed that negotiations are underway with the Russian energy giant Gazprom to increase the volume of gas bought by Budapest.
This deal will make Hungary more dependent on Russian gas, even as the European Union has been working to drastically reduce its reliance on Russian energy supplies since the war in Ukraine broke out.
In a recent interview with the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti, the minister said: “We are currently negotiating a deal for next year.”
Hungary remains the only European country not adhering to the EU’s policy aimed at cutting Moscow’s revenue from gas and oil sales.
France has called for greater transparency regarding the amount of gas being delivered to Europe.
Meanwhile, Belgium and Spain are developing tools to track and limit Russian gas imports, but Hungary’s deepening commercial ties with Moscow are threatening to undermine this strategy.
