In an interview with TSi’s Noticiero Hoy Mismo, the executive director of the National Federation of Farmers and Ranchers of Honduras (Fenagh) and expert in agricultural issues, Guillermo Cerritos, stated that the increase in the price of eggs in the country must be proportional and justified.
The expert explained that, although the cost of eggs has risen, it is necessary to consider other factors that influence this increase.
“If we have lost the value of the lempira against the dollar, then a 1% increase in the currency could be justified in the final price of the product,” Cerritos argued.
However, he also warned that the justification for the increase cannot be limited to the devaluation of the currency alone.
“International prices and interest rates also play a crucial role,” he said. To this end, he proposed the creation of a price observatory together with the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (Cohep) and the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).
“We need to analyse the variables that impact the basic basket in a technical and precise manner, avoiding generalisations that may distort the reality of the market,” he added.
“We must not allow our producers to become discouraged; it is essential that we work with accurate data to ensure the profitability of their activity,” he concluded.
The price of a carton of eggs is already quoted at 100 lempiras in several markets nationwide, and producers foresee further increases in the coming days.
