A family in the Lijacá neighborhood, north of Bogotá, was left homeless after a fire, apparently caused by an electrical appliance they left charging, destroyed their home in a residential complex.
The seven people who lived in the house managed to escape in time, but the fire consumed all their belongings. It is believed that the incident was caused by an electric bicycle that was being charged at the time of the fire.
David Clavijo, one of the residents, recounted what happened in an interview.
“That morning I was in the kitchen and heard a strange sound. I quickly went upstairs to tell my family and we managed to get out of the house. We were just going down the stairs when the fire started. At that moment, the electric bike was connected to the power supply,” he explained.
Fortunately, everyone escaped unharmed, although with the painful loss of all their belongings.
Omar Cuervo, an electrical expert who inspected the site, suggested that the fire could have been caused by improper electrical installation. Cuervo stressed the importance of having adequate installations and recommended checking the wiring before connecting high-consumption electrical appliances.
