When is it celebrated in the United States?
The history of Father’s Day dates back to 1909 , when Sonora Smart Dodd, after hearing a sermon on Mother’s Day, decided to pay tribute to her own father, a Civil War veteran.
She proposed that it be celebrated on June 5 , the date that marked the first Father’s Day in the United States. However, over the years, the celebration has spread and adapted in different countries, each with its own tradition.

Father’s Day is celebrated on different dates in Honduras and other countries and in different ways around the world. While many European countries, such as France and England, as well as most Latin American countries (including Peru, Colombia , Chile, Ecuador, Mexico , Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico and Venezuela), have adopted the American date, not all follow this same tradition.
In countries with a Catholic tradition in Europe, such as Spain, it is celebrated on March 19, coinciding with the Day of Saint Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus. This same date is also commemorated in Bolivia, Croatia, Honduras, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland.
In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated 40 days after Easter. In Russia, on the other hand, it is celebrated on February 23, known as the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland, in honour of soldiers who were fathers and who participated in World War II. In Australia and New Zealand, it is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, while in South Korea, the celebration takes place on March 8, where it is customary to give a carnation as a gift.
