The first cases of local transmission of the new mpox variant on European territory were observed in Great Britain.
Two persons from the same family there were found to be infected with the new variant of the viral disease mpox after coming into contact with a sick person who had returned from Africa.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these are the first cases of local transmission in Europe and even the first outside Africa since August 2024.
The new mpox variant also already surfaced in Germany, Sweden and several Asian countries. But that always happened to someone who himself had recently been in Africa and had become infected there.
