    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Caballero has died suddenly after reportedly collapsing during a futsal match in his homeland of Paraguay, according to The Scotsman. The 46-year-old spent five seasons with Dundee and spent time on loan with Arsenal, making three appearances for the Gunners during the 1998-99 season. Caballero also played for clubs in South America, Greece and South Korea during his playing career.

    DUNDEE ISSUE STATEMENT

    “All at Dundee Football Club are extremely shocked and saddened this morning to learn of the passing of former Dundee player Fabian Caballero,” read a club statement. “Fabian passed away at the age of 46 and will be greatly missed by everyone at Dundee Football Club. Fabian signed for the Dee in July 2000 and became a fan favourite amongst the Dundee supporters. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Fabian’s family at this very sad time.”

    • ARSENAL SADDENED BY NEWS

      Arsenal also issued a response to the sad news: “Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our former player, Fabian Caballero. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

    • TRIBUTES PAID TO CABALLERO

      Further tributes have also been paid to Caballero after his untimely passing. The Paraguayan FA issued a statement that read: “The Paraguayan Football Association deeply regrets the passing of former footballer, Fabian Caballero, who had an outstanding career both in Paraguayan football and abroad. We accompany the family and friends in this difficult time.”

      Former team-mate Jamie Langfield posted on social media: “Absolutely gutted to learn of the passing of my former team mate Fabian Caballero, absolute genius as a player and on his day was such a special player , thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and this difficult time, que descanse en paz.”

      And Tam McManus added: “Stunned to hear of the passing of Fabian Caballero. I played with Fab at Dundee and he was a wonderful footballer. Also spent a great night with him a few years ago at a tribute do for him in Dundee. The Dundee fans absolutely adored him. RIP Fabian.”

      MINUTE’S APPLAUSE TO BE HELD

      Dundee also announced that a minute’s applause will be held before Saturday’s Scottish Premiership match with Aberdeen in memory of Caballero.
