Four minors died in central and Pacific areas of Nicaragua while trying to cross rivers swollen by heavy rains in recent days, authorities reported on Saturday.

Nicaraguan authorities confirmed the death of two minors, one aged 16 and the other 9, who were swept away on Friday afternoon by the current of the Kamusasca River, in the municipality of Villa Sandino, department of Chontales, central Nicaragua, while trying to return to their homes.

The sudden rise of the river surprised the two minors, who, confident after seeing their mothers cross the tributary without any problem, decided to follow them, according to the official report.

The bodies of the teenager and the girl were recovered this Saturday by local residents and the fire department.

The third victim is a 10-year-old boy who was swept away on Friday afternoon by the El Bosque River, also in the municipality of Villa Sandino, while he was heading home with his parents.

The current snatched the minor from his parents’ hands, and his body was found five hours later.

Authorities have asked the population not to cross swollen rivers or flooded areas, and to wait for their levels to drop.EFE
