Kim Jong Un has announced that he will cut off all access to South Korea, including roads and railways connecting the two neighbouring countries.

The “self-defense” move comes as relations between the two countries have become increasingly strained in recent weeks, particularly after South Korea showcased its modern arsenal during Armed Forces Day celebrations.

The North Korean regime has tightened its border with the South, adding mines and barriers, and creating a no-man’s land just beyond the demilitarized zone, according to The Telegraph.

The North Korean military said the actions were a response to South Korea’s numerous military exercises and the frequent presence of US nuclear warheads in the region, the BBC reports.

In a statement carried by state media KCNA, the North Korean military said: “The acute military situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula requires the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] armed forces to take more resolute and stronger measures to more credibly defend national security.”

The gesture is seen as largely symbolic, since roads and railways between the two countries are rarely used.
