Felipe Calderón’s former Secretary of Public Security said that AMLO’s reform of the Judicial Branch is to benefit criminals.
The lawyer of the former Secretary of Public Security during Felipe Calderón’s six-year term, Genaro García Luna , sent a letter to journalist Keegan Hamilton in which he states that contrary to his “innocence”, there is evidence of alleged links between the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and drug trafficking.
In the third of the four pages that make up García Luna’s letter, the former Mexican official arrested in 2019 and found guilty of drug trafficking by a New York jury states that “it is public knowledge and is in the official records of Mexico and the United States, the contacts, videos, audios, photographs, communication records and management between the current President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and his operators with the leaders of drug trafficking and their families.”
During his trial, prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy told jurors she was not asking them to like the witnesses; “They are criminals who have committed horrible acts, but it takes one criminal to know another .”
These words are brought up because during García Luna’s trial, high-level criminals in the Sinaloa Cartel’s organization testified; such as Sergio Villarreal Barragán (El Grande) , right-hand man of Arturo Beltrán Leyva, and Jesús Reynaldo Zambada García (El Rey), brother of El Mayo Zambada.
“In particular, with the drug traffickers who were used as witnesses against me during the trial, who even during the trial accused President López Obrador and his operators of being linked to them and drug trafficking ,” the document reads.
AMLO and the Sinaloa Cartel
It is not clear to whom Genaro García Luna is referring in his handwritten letter sent less than a month ago to ask how long he will spend in prison for helping the Sinaloa Cartel traffic drugs while he was in charge of public safety in Mexico.
In his letter, García Luna also talks about the arrest of Mayo Zambada and how it would be further evidence of the alleged collusion between AMLO and drug trafficking.
“These facts are corroborated by the recent capture of drug trafficker Ismael Zambada ‘Mayo Zambada’, the letter issued by him where he points out the links of the current government with him and drug trafficking; the position of the Government of Mexico against the capture of the kingpin and the dismantling of the Judicial Branch of Mexico, whose main beneficiaries are the criminals,” he wrote.
Sentence against Garcia Luna
Felipe Calderón’s former Secretary of Public Security stressed that the “pause-suspension” of official relations between Mexico and the United States – decreed by AMLO – are proof of his statements and the facts narrated above to favor the top leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Genaro García Luna is scheduled to learn the sentence imposed by Judge Brian Cogan on October 9 ; the same judge who sentenced Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán to life imprisonment and who will also be in charge of prosecuting El Mayo Zambada.
