German soldiers enter Lithuania

FAST DOWNLOAD

Lithuania and Germany have agreed to station a combat-ready German brigade in the Baltic state. According to the newly concluded agreement, these will include not only German soldiers, but also civilian employees of the German armed forces.

German lawmakers still have to ratify the agreement for the deployment of troops and representatives of the German army in Lithuania. This should happen next year. In this way, both countries want to be able to anticipate more quickly the changing and explosive situation in Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The aim is to be able to deploy 5,000 soldiers by 2027. A first German commando of around twenty soldiers has already arrived in Lithuania in April. Another 120 will follow in October. From a strategic point of view, Lithuania is an important location, as it borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus.
