Economics expert Mario Sosa has pointed out that there is a “divorce between the private sector and the government, which can hinder both national and foreign investment.”

In the last few hours, the Secretary of Labor, Wilmer Fernández, has responded to the recent announcement of the closure of three maquiladora plants in the country, belonging to the American company “HansBrands.”

The closure affects facilities located in Choloma and Villanueva, in the department of Cortés, which could leave at least two thousand workers unemployed, which has generated concern among the local population.

Fernández stressed that the situation is not the responsibility of the government, “but rather is the result of the sale of an important brand linked to the production of the maquilas,” he said.

“By selling the brand, the manufacturing company loses the contract for the manufacture and distribution of the products, which triggers the closure of operations,” he argued.

However, economist Mario Sosa has pointed out that there is a “divorce between the private sector and the government, which can hinder both national and foreign investment.”

Sosa also warned that since 2022, more than 40,000 Hondurans have lost their jobs due to maquila closures, highlighting the need for a more coordinated strategy to promote job stability, he said.

However, the Secretary of Labor also announced the opening of a project in El Paraíso, which will generate approximately 3,000 jobs.

In 2024, nearly one million young people will find themselves in a situation of no work and no study,” said Jorge Valladares, director of the Bright Futures project of the World Vision organization, citing data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
