The Guatemalan government began on Sunday the transfer of highly dangerous inmates to a renovated maximum security prison located in the south of the Central American country, according to official sources.
The transfer took place from various prisons to the renovated prison, formerly known as “El Infiernito” and renamed “Renovación I”, according to the government headed by Bernardo Arévalo de León.
The prison is located in the department (province) of Escuintla, located about 60 kilometers south of Guatemala City, and was renovated during the last six months, with capacity for 250 high-risk inmates.
For the moment, the authorities have not provided more information about the number of prisoners transferred this Sunday. However, the Minister of the Interior (Gobernación), Francisco Jiménez, indicated through his official channels that “in a few hours” more details will be released and assured President Arévalo that the “mission” in the new prison had been accomplished.
The transfer on Sunday required ground reinforcements and also helicopter surveillance by security forces at the “Pavón” prison on the outskirts of Guatemala City, according to various sources.
According to official figures from 2023, Guatemala has around 20,000 people deprived of liberty, which represents approximately 300 percent overcrowding in the Central American country’s prisons.
The new prison will be able to accommodate 250 highly dangerous inmates, who will be monitored by a closed circuit of cameras, as well as X-ray machines to monitor everything that enters the prison, based on data released by the Ministry of the Interior. EFE
