Guatemalan police intercept 70 migrants and arrest suspected traffickers

Two alleged "coyotes" (human traffickers), the bus driver and assistant, were arrested and sent to court.

Guatemalan police intercepted a bus with 70 illegal migrants of 12 nationalities, including 11 children, and arrested two suspected drug traffickers, authorities said in a statement.

The passenger service vehicle was stopped by agents at kilometer 69.6 of the Pacific Highway, in the jurisdiction of the department of Escuintla (south), which leads to the border with Mexico, the Police said on Sunday in its X account.

The operation was carried out in “follow-up to (a) line of investigation into criminal structures that are dedicated to the illegal trafficking of people” seeking to reach the United States, the institution clarified.

There were 70 migrants traveling in the transport unit, the majority (27) from Cuba, but also from Russia, China, India, Uzbekistan, Ecuador, Vietnam and Venezuela (9), who were referred to the Guatemalan Migration Institute for the repatriation process.

Central America serves as a corridor for thousands of migrants from different parts of the world seeking to reach the United States.
