Harris received 54% of the vote compared to Trump’s 40% in a poll of 1,000 registered Latino voters in the US.

Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris leads her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump , in Latino voting intention , but has the smallest advantage of a Democratic candidate in the last four elections, according to a Telemundo, NBC News and CNBC poll released Sunday.

Harris achieved 54% of the voting intention compared to Trump ‘s 40% in a poll of 1,000 registered Latino voters in the US , conducted in English and Spanish between September 15 and 23 and with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Harris

‘s 14 percentage point lead over Trump improves on the one President Joe Biden had before he withdrew his candidacy for re-election this past July, but the figure represents the narrowest margin for a Democratic candidate since 2012, CNBC reports. Fifty -four percent of respondents also said they prefer Democratic control of Congress, versus 42 percent who prefer Republicans, which is also the smallest Democratic advantage since 2012. The poll shows that cost of living and inflation, as well as jobs and the economy, are the issues of greatest concern to Latinos, in line with the general trend in the U.S. , and those are the issues on which Trump scores best. Forty-six percent of respondents said they prefer Trump versus 37% Harris when it comes to tackling inflation, and on the economy in general, Trump also prevails (45% versus 41%).

On other issues, Harris leads Trump by the most (39 percentage points) on humane treatment and protection of immigrant rights, followed by the issue of abortion (32 points).

However, the survey reflects the diversity of the Latino community in the US and its division on immigration issues: for example, 62% said that immigration helps more than it harms and 35% the opposite, the latter percentage being the highest among Latinos in two decades, Telemundo reports.

Apart from that, 52% considered it more important to give immigrants a path to citizenship and avoid discrimination, compared to 47% who advocated making the border more secure and stopping illegal immigrant crossings. EFE
