The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Honduras, through the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Life (FEDCV), has filed a fiscal request against Óscar Alexi Guardado Alvarenga, Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres and Lenin Adonis Cruz Munguía , accused of the murder of human rights defender and environmentalist Juan Antonio López , for which the courts of justice are preparing the hearing for the declaration of the accused.
The crime occurred on September 14 in Tocoa, Colón.
The request was filed this Sunday, October 6, in the Court of First Instance with National Jurisdiction over Organized Crime, Environment and Corruption in San Pedro Sula, Cortés.
According to the investigation, Guardado Alvarenga met with the other two defendants before the attack, where they provided him with a motorcycle used in the crime.
Guardado Alvarenga then watched the victim before shooting him, causing his immediate death in the Fabio Ochoa neighborhood of Tocoa.
Authorities were able to identify those involved thanks to security camera images and a multidisciplinary team that collected evidence.
The three defendants were arrested by the National Police in Tocoa and face judicial charges.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested that the case remain confidential while investigations continue.
Arrested for the murder of Juan Lopez
So far, four people have been arrested on suspicion of having participated in the murder of Juan López.
Last Friday, after intense operations carried out in Tocoa, Colón, by the National Police, the alleged perpetrator of the murder and one of the alleged accomplices were captured. The detainees are:
Oscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga , 26, arrested in the Echenique neighborhood of Tocoa, Colón.
Lenin Adonay Cruz Munguía , 30 years old, arrested in the El Chorro neighborhood of Sabá, Colón.
On Saturday, two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the crime. At a press conference, the director general of the National Police, Juan Manuel Aguilar Godoy , stressed that there are technical and scientific indications linking these individuals to the murder of López.
The evidence included analysis of devices and information and telecommunications technologies (ICTs), which made it possible to reconstruct the context of the events.
During the raids, authorities also seized a blue motorcycle, which was allegedly used as a means of transportation in the execution of the crime.
Authorities have assured that they will continue with further investigations to strengthen the case and bring those responsible to justice.
Murder of Juan Lopez
The murder of Juan López, which occurred on Saturday, September 14 , has left a deep shock in the community, highlighting the risks faced by environmental defenders in Honduras.
López was shot dead by unknown persons as he was leaving a church in Tocoa, Colón.
