A Honduran woman is among the migrants killed by soldiers in Chiapas, Mexico on October 1, according to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The Attorney General’s Office said that the presence of the corresponding consulates has been requested to support the investigation and provide assistance to the victims.
“The deceased were identified as one from Honduras, another from Peru and three from Egypt,” said the statement issued by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) of Mexico.
It is important to mention that the Honduran Foreign Minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina , wrote yesterday on his social networks that there were no Hondurans among the fatal victims of this armed attack.
“Another FAKE news. Our @EMBAJADAHNDMEX has consulted with the Mexican authorities and no Honduran man or woman has died in this alleged incident. We regret the loss of other lives and express our solidarity with their families. However, there are no Hondurans who have died,” Reina wrote.
TuNota also contacted the Foreign Ministry authorities to verify whether they had any information about the migrant, but did not receive a response.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that the migrants shot dead on Tuesday by soldiers in Chiapas, a state on the country’s southern border, were from Egypt, El Salvador and Peru, while assuring that the events are already being investigated.
“They are from Egypt, El Salvador and Peru ,” the president said during her morning press conference when questioned on the subject.
The Mexican leader, who regretted the incident, said that “it must be investigated and punished,” and affirmed that the elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) who shot at the foreigners are already at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which will investigate the incident.
Sheinbaum was referring to the incident reported by Sedena on Wednesday, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, October 1, on a stretch between Villa Comaltitlán and Huixtla, municipalities of Chiapas.
According to the information provided, two Mexican Army agents would have confused 33 migrants traveling in 2 vans with alleged criminals, so they shot them and left 4 dead on the spot, 12 injured, of which 2 died after being transferred to a hospital.
On Wednesday, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry confirmed that one of the deceased in the incident was from that country and “strongly” condemned the events that occurred.
In this regard, Sheinbaum said that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, together with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, are in contact with the embassies of the three nations to support the relatives of the people who died and are in contact with everything that is required.
He said that the FGR will be the one to carry out the investigation and determine the responsibility of the soldiers who fired and if there is anyone else involved.
“There is an investigation, it is not only the Military Police that has to do the investigation, but the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic and the elements are already made available,” he insisted.
He said that “a situation like this cannot be repeated,” and that the necessary measures are being taken, and he instructed the general secretary of Sedena, Ricardo Trevilla, to ensure that “this happens in this way.”
The events occurred after the six-year term of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) gave an increasing role to the Armed Forces in security tasks in the country, where 36,000 elements had immigration tasks.
