How to extend the battery life of your electric bike

FAST DOWNLOAD

An electric bike is a significant investment. It is therefore essential to maintain it carefully, especially its battery, which is the most expensive part of the bike. Simple actions can extend its lifespan.

The batteries of first generation e-bikes are generally not replaceable, as they are no longer manufactured. A new battery costs between 600 and 800 euros, with an average lifespan of about 5 years.

Fortunately, adopting good habits will help you maximize the longevity of your electric bike battery:

  1. Avoid discharging it completely: driving with a discharged battery considerably reduces its lifespan. Ideally, recharge it when it reaches between 25 and 50% charge.
  2. Do not leave your battery charging when it is at 100%: unplug it as soon as it is fully charged.
  3. Do not fully charge your battery: the ideal charge level to extend the life of a battery is 95%.
  4. Charge the battery regularly, even when you are not riding: charge your electric bike battery every 6 to 8 weeks to avoid total discharge.
  5. Store the battery in a dry place, away from sunlight , ideally at a room temperature of 15 to 20°C.
  6. Remove the battery before cleaning your bike to avoid direct contact with water. If necessary, use a damp cloth carefully.
  7. Remove the battery when transporting the bike by car , for example on a bike rack.
