WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid had been expecting Vinicius Jr to be crowned the best player in the world but ended up boycotting the glitzy ceremony after learning Rodri would win the Ballon d’Or instead. Los Blancos are not the only ones seething at the turn of events, with Marta posting a video on social media to express her rage at the news. Marta can be seen ranting at the decision while, rather bizarrely, pushing a baby stroller containing a dog through a car park.

  • WHAT MARTA SAID

She said: “I waited all year to see Vini Jr. deservedly recognized as the best player of the moment. Now he tells me they won’t give him the Ballon d’Or? What Ballon d’Or is that? No, it’s over!”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win has sparked plenty of debate and controversy throughout the football world. Madrid fans have described Vini Jr’s snub as the “biggest robbery in football history,” while former and current team-mates Toni Kroos and Eduardo Camavinga have also hit out after seeing the Brazilian miss out. Real Madrid did end up winning the Men’s Club of the Year and Coach of the Year prizes but had no representatives at the ceremony to pick up their prizes after cancelling plans to send a 50-strong delegation to the ceremony.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Marta knows all about being crowned the best player in the world. The Brazil great was named the best female player in the world on six occasions by FIFA.

    WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS JR

Vinicius has pledged to “do it 10x if I have to” after being beaten to the Ballon d’Or by Rodri. The Brazilian and his Real Madrid team will aim to get back on track after a 4-0 Clasico defeat last time out when they come up against Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday.
