Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has confirmed that he wanted to leave the club in the summer after they agreed a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Kelleher has revealed his frustration at Liverpool rejecting bids for him in the summer, as they also struck a deal to sign Mamardashvili, although he will not join the club until next summer. Nevertheless, the Republic of Ireland international has suggested that he will soon seek a move after being left unimpressed by the club’s decision to reject a bid from Nottingham Forest for him.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Kelleher, 25, has made a total of 47 first-team appearances for Liverpool, but they have come in dribs and drabs. Last season, he played in 10 Premier League games and is likely to face a similarly reduced role this season behind Alisson.
WHAT KELLEHER SAID
Kelleher told reporters: “I made it clear in the last few years that I want to go somewhere and be a number one. The club has made that decision to get a goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) which makes it look like they’ve made a decision to go in another direction. Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. It’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision. My ambition is clear. I’m good enough and I want to go and play week in, week out.”
WHAT NEXT?
Kelleher is only likely to receive an opportunity under Arne Slot if Alisson is injured, or if Liverpool embark on a deep run in either the Carabao Cup or FA Cup. In January, he may well look to move on.
