Alexei Navalny’s widow has said she plans to run for president of Russia once Vladimir Putin leaves office when free and fair elections are possible in the country.

“My goal is to bring change to the country. If I return to Russia, I will run for president,” Yulia Navalnya told the BBC in an interview broadcast days before the publication of her husband’s posthumous memoir, “Patriot.”

“My political opponent is Vladimir Putin. And I will do everything to ensure that his regime falls as soon as possible,” said Ms Navalnaya, who lives in exile abroad.

Shortly after Mr Navalny’s death in an Arctic penal colony in February, Ms Navalnaya vowed to continue her work as an activist. In July, Russian law enforcement authorities charged her with “participation in an extremist organization”
