It’s been 20 years since Robert Durst, a wealthy American heir and sulphurous businessman, breathed freedom… 20 years since he was suspected of murdering three people.

His wife, Kathleen McCormack, mysteriously disappeared in 1982 in New York. Susan Berman, his best friend, was found shot in the head in Beverly Hills in the early 2000s. The day after her murder, she was to be questioned by the police about Kathleen’s disappearance. In the same year, her neighbor, Morris Black, was killed, dismembered and thrown into the sea. The bags containing the body parts had been spotted by fishermen in Galveston Bay, Texas. Robert Dust was acquitted of the crime, his lawyers pleading self-defense.

While he was still slipping through the cracks and police were unable to get him charged, everything unraveled in just a few minutes in March 2015. It was a few sentences uttered by the suspected man himself, during the filming of a documentary dedicated to his life “The Curse: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst”, that were to bring him down. How ironic! Just as he thought his microphone had been switched off, Robert Durst went to the bathroom to relieve himself, and in that private moment whispered to himself: “What have I done? I killed them all, of course”. On the eve of the broadcast of the final episode of the biographical documentary, the man is arrested by the police and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Susan Berman. He will also be indicted in New York for the murder of his wife, Kathleen McCormack.

In January 2022, the 78-year-old multi-billionaire, the black sheep of a prestigious New York real estate family, died in custody and of natural causes linked to his numerous health issues.
