    • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mourinho voiced his regret about taking over at Fenerbahce in a stunning eight-minute rant after the club’s 3-2 win over Trabzonspor at the weekend. Fenerbahce are firmly in the mix at the top of the Super Lig, but the quality of officiating and the “bad smell” of the Turkish league has left the 61-year-old disillusioned with his new role; he even admitted recently to being “ready” to return to the Premier League.

        THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mourinho said he wants a job “at the bottom” of the English top flight so he can avoid competing in European competitions, and struggling Everton certainly fit the criteria. The Toffees have found themselves fighting relegation battles for the past few years and it doesn’t look like this season will be any different; Sean Dyche’s side are 16th in the table, having won just two of their first 10 matches. So Alan Shearer’s prediction that Mourinho could take over the Merseyside club perhaps isn’t out of the question.

        WHAT SHEARER SAID

“Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been back in the news and media a lot recently, and the one thing you cannot do is underestimate him and his record,” Shearer told Betfair. “He creates headlines, whether that’s for winning trophies or being brutally honest as he was at the weekend when he said, ‘nobody watches the Turkish league.’ He is box office, and I think there’s always a message he’s trying to get across in the background so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was him edging for a move back to the Premier League.

“Where could he go? Let us not forget he was recently at Roma, who are now close to their purchase of Everton – is there a subliminal message in there for what his future holds? With his record, any club in the Premier League would always be interested in him, however, he isn’t scared of telling it like it is at the football club, so he’s going to tell it like it is and he’s not afraid of causing chaos. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see him back in the Premier League within the next 12 months.”

        WHAT NEXT FOR MOURINHO?

A Europa League meeting with AZ Alkmaar awaits Mourinho and Fenerbahce on Thursday evening. Fener drew 1-1 with Manchester United in their most recent appearance in the competition and have five points from their first three games in the league phase.
