In the last few hours, it was reported that Juan José Sebreli, a prestigious writer and sociologist aged 93, had died. According to reports, he had been hospitalized since last weekend at the Italian Hospital due to various health conditions, which is why interest in his biography arose .
” On Sunday he began to feel ill, he was hospitalized, and he finally passed away this morning ,” Sebreli’s close relatives told Infobae. His death leaves an irreparable void in each of his followers who expressed their indignation and sadness.
Sebreli was a pioneer on several fronts, from existentialist thought to the defense of the rights of sexual minorities in Argentina in the 1970s. His last public appearance was at the National Library, where he participated in the presentation of a book about his work “El incansable polemista.”

Juan José Sebreli was a prominent Argentine philosopher, sociologist, essayist, literary critic and historian, born on November 3, 1930 in Buenos Aires and died on November 1, 2024 at the Italian Hospital in Buenos Aires.
His career in literature began at the age of 20 when he began publishing essays in magazines such as Sur and Contorno and later in Perfil, La Nación and Clarín, also recognized for founding the Homosexual Liberation Front in the 1970s.
Throughout his career, Sebreli published more than twenty books, including Buenos Aires, Everyday Life and Alienation (1964), where he analyzes urban life in Buenos Aires. He was also critical of populism and Peronism, and his works reflect a profound reflection on Argentine history and society.
Sebreli had no wife or children, so he spent his last years surrounded by a small group of close friends. One of them, Álvaro Zicarelli , mentioned that he accompanied him daily in his final moments and that he had known him since 2002. He was known for his outspoken and youthful energy, even in his last years.
Despite being one of the most recognized figures in Argentina, very little was known about his immediate family, as he stood out for keeping his private life out of the public eye, leading some to wonder about his sexual orientation.

Although Sebreli distanced himself from the group due to ideological differences, his activism in support of LGBTQ+ rights was significant at a time when homosexuality was stigmatized and persecuted.
