Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of the Indian city of Calcutta on Tuesday night to demand justice for a doctor raped and murdered in a hospital in August.
The discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s bloody body in a hospital in the city on August 9 sparked outrage across the country and brought the issue of violence against women back to the fore.
For weeks, tens of thousands of people have been protesting almost daily in Kolkata in support of doctors, striking to demand additional protective measures.
The health workers had suspended their protest for ten days but resumed it on Tuesday after failing to achieve the expected progress from the authorities in West Bengal.
“Our message is clear: our protests will not stop until we get justice,” Rimjhim Sinha, one of the movement’s organisers, told AFP.
The victim’s father joined the protesters. “My family is devastated… My daughter’s soul will not find peace until justice is done,” he said.
The police chief and the heads of regional health services have resigned from their posts.
The Kolkata crime has revived memories of the 2012 gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus that sparked weeks of nationwide protests.
